Registration renewal
Most light vehicles more than 5 years old need a pink slip each year before registration renewal.
Unregistered and interstate vehicles
An AUVIS inspection (previously the blue slip) is needed if registration expired more than 3 months ago, the vehicle came from another state, territory or country, or it has no number plates.
An inspection is not a history check
A roadworthy or safety inspection covers the car's condition on the day. It does not show finance owing, or whether the car has been reported stolen or written off. For that, run a PPSR check before you pay.
Rules change. This guide was last checked against Transport for NSW (Service NSW) on 22 September 2026; confirm with them before you buy or sell.
